Gov. Perry requests emergency drought declaration for all Texas counties

I’d like to personally thank Governor Perry for making an official request to United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Vilsack to approve an emergency drought designation for all 254 counties. If approved by USDA, this federal declaration will allow farmers and ranchers access to emergency loans and disaster relief.

Meteorologists are saying this drought Texas is experiencing right now is one that only happens once or twice every century. This, coupled with an economic crisis that’s lowered agricultural values, but increased production costs, is presenting a significant challenge for Texas farmers and ranchers, and we must do what we can to help those who work diligently to provide us with the food on our tables and the clothes on our backs.

In the meantime, I’d like to encourage Texas producers in need of hay to utilize the TDA Hay Hotline to find sellers.

Governor Perry appoints the Commission for Disaster Recovery and Renewal

I appreciate Governor Perry appointing the Commission for Disaster Recovery and Renewal and look forward to continuing to assist the Texas agriculture community, as well as other victims, of hurricanes and natural disasters. Texans have proven time and again they can face adversity and overcome. I am confident this committee will develop a plan that will ensure timely and appropriate assistance for Texans who have suffered through major disasters.

Having previously served as chair of the Senate Committee on Transportation and Homeland Security, I can assure all Texans our system of response and recovery is fast acting and designed to be receptive to the needs of its citizens.
