Going to Bat for Childhood Nutrition

Guest Blogger: Lindsay Rodgers, Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Food and Nutrition

In keeping with the spirit of the World Series, teams of Texas child nutrition professionals recently went to bat on behalf of nutrition and wellness.

Taking the field Oct. 23 in the Mount Pleasant area of East Texas, the Lunch Bunch Fall Softball Tournament of Champions covered all the bases of good fun and friendly competition. In the end, the Pittsburg ISD Peaches beat the Mt. Pleasant ISD Café’ Divas and the Hughes Springs ISD Chili Peppers to take the championship title.

The tournament was such a hit, the nutrition pros have agreed to continue their exercise efforts and play at least one tournament every fall and spring.

Let's applaud these teams for stepping up to the plate on game day and every day to promote the 3E’s of Healthy Living - Education, Exercise and Eating Right!

As childhood obesity becomes a growing public health concern, the need for better health and nutrition education has never been greater. The grants will fund better health and nutrition education and outreach as TDA continues to partner with schools and other organizations to promote the 3E's of Healthy Living - Education, Exercise and Eating Right.

Senate Finance Committee Testimony

Wednesday, I testified before the Senate Finance Committee and discussed the Texas Department of Agriculture’s 2010-2011 budget request. TDA has taken on many additional responsibilities over the past few years and we hope to improve upon these services.

After holding discussions with producers, agribusinesses and professionals all across the state, we identified several exceptional items we believe need additional resources to better serve and protect all Texans.

TDA’s four main priorities are Agricultural Biosecurity, Consumer Protection, Economic Development and Healthy Lifestyles. I look forward to working with our dedicated members in the House and Senate as they draft a budget that ensures Texans receive necessary and efficient services that maximize the investment of state dollars.

Public Service Announcement Shoot at McNeil High School

Today, I spent the morning with some outstanding students from McNeil High School in Austin. The students and I put together a Public Service Announcement reminding Texas parents and kids that winning on the court or the classroom starts with a healthy meal at school.

Our Texas schools are doing a great job and serve healthy and affordable breakfasts, lunches and snacks. Research shows students who eat healthy and exercise perform better in school. So, as you or your child head back to class this year remember Texas schools are serving up winning food for a winning lifestyle. You can check out the PSA we worked on today when it starts running on TV stations across the state next month.

I want to thank Round Rock ISD Superintendent Jesús Chávez and all of those at McNeil High School and Round Rock ISD who helped with today's production.
